When you first got braces, it might have seemed like it would take forever to finish your treatment! But time passes quickly, and now you may be approaching the end of your journey. You may be excited about finally seeing your teeth without their brackets and wires. What can you expect throughout the braces removal process? Is there anything you should keep in mind as you embark on this new chapter for your smile? This blog post explains some important points.

The Braces Removal Experience

There is no need to be nervous about getting your braces removed. Many patients are pleasantly surprised by how easy the process is. Your orthodontic team will simply use a special tool to release the brackets from your teeth. You might notice some pressure as they work, but this process should not be painful.

Once the brackets are wires are off, your care provider will clean your teeth to remove any adhesive residue that is still clinging to them. They will also likely take some X-rays and photos to document the results of your treatment. In most cases, the braces removal appointment (also called a debonding appointment) takes 1 – 2 hours.

What You May Feel After Braces Are Removed

During the first few days after your braces are taken off, some minor discomfort is to be expected. Your teeth and gums may feel sensitive, and your soft oral tissues might be a bit swollen. Be gentle during your oral hygiene routine so you do not worsen any tenderness. You can also try rinsing with warm salt water to soothe inflammation. If necessary, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers as well. If you notice any severe pain or have any concerns, contact your orthodontic team for assistance.

Transitioning to a Retainer

After getting your braces removed, you will move on to the maintenance phase of your treatment plan. Your care team will give you a retainer, a custom device that is designed to prevent your teeth from shifting out of their new positions.

At first, you will likely need to keep the retainer in your mouth for 20 – 22 hours every day. After a few months, your teeth will start to solidify into their positions, and you may be able to wear your retainer only at night. Eventually, you might need to use it just a few nights each week. If it ever starts to feel unusually tight, that is a sign you are not using it consistently enough.

Getting your braces removed is a big milestone! Listen to aftercare instructions from your orthodontist, and take time to enjoy this big moment in your oral health journey.
