How do I know if orthodontic treatment is right for me?

There are numerous benefits to pursuing orthodontic treatment. Treatment may be recommended due to functional or aesthetic reasons. Treatment may be recommended for patients who are facing the following dental conditions:

  • Gaps and noticeable spacing
  • Excessive tooth wear/breakage
  • Poor jaw alignment
  • Difficulty with cleaning teeth or chewing certain foods
  • Protrusion of the upper or lower row of teeth
  • Overlapping or overcrowded teeth
  • Traumatic occlusion (bite)

Are traditional metal braces my only option for straightening my smile?

No! Dr. Mason and his team at Polaris Orthodontic Center offer a wide variety of orthodontic techniques that address different patient needs. In addition to traditional orthodontics, Invisalign and damon self-ligating braces are also available.

As an adult, am I too old for orthodontic treatment?

Not at all. Adults in their sixties or even seventies can undertake orthodontic treatment. Teeth may move a little slower in some adults, but everyone’s teeth respond to orthodontic forces.

Do braces or aligners hurt?

You will likely feel some sensitivity and discomfort in the first few days after having the braces placed. Your gums, cheeks, and teeth will need time to get used to the new sensations within the mouth. Orthodontic treatment with Aligners such as Invisalign is generally more comfortable than treatment with braces. If you’re experiencing excessive pain, contact our office right away.

How long will I have to wear my braces or aligners?

The amount of time will vary depending on the chosen plan of action and the individual patient’s needs. Most patients are treated within 8 to 30 months. The average treatment time is about 18 months.

Do I still need to go to regular dental checkups with my dentist while I have braces?

Absolutely! Attending regular dental visits is very important during orthodontic treatment with braces or aligners. Most patients must get their teeth cleaned by their dentist every 3-6 months during orthodontic treatment.

Why choose an orthodontist?

Orthodontists are experts in correcting misalignments of the teeth and/or jaw, as they have attended years of additional specialty training after completing dental school. Trusting your overbite, underbite, jaw abnormality, or other similar concerns in the hands of an orthodontist is the best way to ensure that your results will be successful and long-lasting.

What will my first days after having braces put on be like?

You will likely experience some discomfort and/or tenderness following the placement of braces. Predicting when this discomfort will dissipate is hard, as every patient is different. However, you should gradually acclimate to the braces after a week.

Does my oral hygiene routine need to change because of braces?

Patients need to spend more time cleaning /brushing their teeth with braces. We recommend the use of sonic brushes and Waterpik for all patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces. Required oral hygiene for patients getting treated with Invisalign is the same as before the start of treatment, as these patients can brush and floss easily.

Does my diet need to change because of braces?

When undergoing orthodontic treatment, it’s important to eat foods that will be gentle on the brackets and wires. In general, do your best to avoid items that are overly sticky or tough, such as popcorn, nuts, gum, and candies. When enjoying harder foods, cut them into smaller pieces to avoid damage.

Will I need a retainer?

All orthodontic patients will require a retention stage to maintain their treatment results. We strongly recommend that patients follow through with their hard work and wear their custom-made retainers as instructed. In most cases, full-time wear is necessary for the first 6 months, followed by only nighttime wear moving forward. We offer fixed and removable retainers to our patients.
